Cel-Pak Cellulose Insulation

Cel-Pak Cellulose Insulation

Cel-Pak is a high quality loose-fill cellulose insulation made from recycled paper. Use as loose fill to blow attic caps, or dense-pack into wall and ceiling cavities for building retrofits or new construction. It exceeds fiberglass, Icynene spray foam and rockwool in R-value per inch thickness.

National Fiber's Cel-Pak is a high quality cellulose insulation for existing buildings and new construction. Cel-Pak is made from 100% pre-consumer and post-consumer recycled newspapers (from unsold newspapers and paper drives). This is the cleanest, highest quality recycled paper available. Benefits include:

  • Energy savings: Cellulose has a very high R-value of 3.8 per inch, compared to 2.2 per inch for conventional fiberglass batts. Loose fill and dense-packed cellulose fills in behind pipes, wires and electrical outlets--eliminating gaps and voids left by traditional fiberglass batt or foam insulation. Cellulose remains effective at blocking heat transfer at temperatures below freezing, while the effectiveness of fiberglass drops substantially. Cellulose processing requires far less energy than the production of either fiberglass or foam insulation products, and utilizes a material--waste paper-that would otherwise be sent to a landfill.

  • Sound dampening: The density of cellulose also makes it a superior sound barrier - achieving STC ratings as high as 45 in a standard 2x4 wall: substantially better than either fiberglass or foam insulation.

  • Fire retarding: The cellulose fibers are impregnated with naturally-occurring fire retardant borates. This makes cellulose insulation not only safer than fiberglass and foam, but also safer than almost any other material in the building. Cellulose insulation provides a 1-hour (U305), 2x4 load-bearing firewall when a single layer of 5/8 inch type X gypsum is used on each side of the wall assembly.

  • Pest resistant: Cel-Pak is also one of the only insulations on the market treated to prevent mold. The same borates used as a fire retardant also repel insects and vermin, such as mice, cockroaches, and termites. Fiberglass and foam insulation do not offer these same benefits.
What Makes it Green?
  • Superior thermal insulation saves energy
  • Made with 100% recycled fibers
  • Does not contain formaldehyde and does not offgas
  • Low embodied (manufacturing) energy
Where to Use: Cel-Pak can be used in new construction or remodels and retrofits, in both commercial and residential buildings. Recommended for all climates zones, including coastal environments.

Installation: Cel-Pak is blown into place using an industrial-quality blowing machine. In new construction, the wall cavity is formed by stretching and stapling synthetic webbing or poly sheeting across the open-faced studs. A slit is made in the webbing for the blower hose, the hose is inserted, and the cavity can be viewed as it is filled with dense-packed cellulose insulation. Sheetrock is then installed on the studs over the membrane. In retrofits, Cel-Pak is either blown through holes drilled in the interior walls, or a section of exterior siding is removed and holes are drilled through the sheathing. A tube is used to reach the ends of the cavities.

Purchasing: Cel-Pak is sold in 25-lb bags. The manufacturer recommends that Cel-Pak be blown in by a factory-trained and certified insulation contractor. Green Depot can help you locate a professional installer; contact us for details at 800-238-5008 or contactus@greendepot.com.

Applicable standards: Cel-Pak cellulose insulation complies fully with CPSP standard HH-I-515E; 16CFR 1209; and ASTM C-739. All of the physical characteristics of Cel-Pak cellulose insulation, including fire retardancy, are tested and monitored on a regular and random basis by R&D Services, a certified third party testing service, and the Cel-Pak bag is labeled with these test results.
